“Airports say a lot about a place because they are both a city’s business card and its handshake: they tell us what a community yearns to be as well as what it really is.” Pico Iyer
Garry is also currently the Vice Chair of Mackay region tourism board, is also a member of the Mackay Region Advisory panel who regularly interface with the Queensland and Australian Federal sitting parliamentary members, to discuss regional specify issues, including access to the region, freight capabilities, emerging markets and regulatory inhibitors.
Garry is also a founding member of the Australian Airports Association Customer Experience Working Group, who are passionate about providing a simplified, customer experience framework for all airports with minimal resource or cost impact to industry.
Before joining Mackay Airport, Garry was Head of Operations at Darwin International Airport, which also supported Alice Springs and Tennant Creek Airports. With Darwin Airport being a joint user aerodrome with the Australian Defence Force, the role required a strategic and at times steadfast approach, due to the complexities dealing with an Australian federal government department. Garry was chair of the Darwin Airports emergency management committee and a member of NT Governments emergency management framework (transport division), which was activated regularly due to Cyclones, Volcanic activity and Emergency evacuations of remote communities. Garry was also a member of the National Facilitation Committee on behalf of Northern Territory airports.
Garry is a strong advocate for mental health and emotional well being, particularly in regional and remote areas and is passionate campaigner for societal leadership and diversity.
