Regional airports welcome $41 million infrastructure funding announcement
The Australian Airports Association (AAA) has welcomed the announcement that 60 regional airports will share in $41.2 million in funding to upgrade essential infrastructure.
“This is good news for airports and a major boost for many regional communities,” AAA Chief Executive Officer James Goodwin said.
The funding is part of the Federal Government’s $100 million Regional Airports Program announced in 2019 following the AAA’s 2-year campaign to increase the attention of policy makers on the need for infrastructure upgrades at regional airports.
“The funding will assist airports with significant maintenance projects such as runway and taxiway upgrades and improved safety measures,” Mr Goodwin said.
“Airports can be the backbone of the economy in many regional centres. This funding will provide a significant boost to airports to renew their infrastructure after the high operational tempo of the Bushfire Summer and from hibernation during the COVID-19 downturn,”
“The infrastructure projects will also enable these airports to be better placed to contribute to regional tourism when travel returns to normal,” he said.
The funding requires a co-contribution from regional airports and the AAA looks forward to the second round of Regional Airports Program funding being opened for applications soon.
