Decarbonising airports: Taking off to a net zero future

Date: Wednesday 16 June 2021

Time: 11am – 12pm AEST

Presenters: Kevin Dearden, Aviation Practice Leader, Aurecon and Ben McGarry, Future Energy Capability Leader, Aurecon

Kevin has over 17 years of technical aviation engineering design and airport planning experience. He has been involved in largescale airport infrastructure projects in UK, chiefly at London Heathrow with the airfield developments for Terminal 5 and Terminal 2; and has spent a decade in South Africa working on South African and wider-Africa airport projects. Kevin recently lead the terminal precinct apron works component of a new major airport development in Sydney. More recently, Kevin design managed the delivery of the preliminary design for Perth’s new runway. He has a keen interest in alternative fuel technologies for both aircraft and ground support equipment, specifically hydrogen, and how possible widespread adoption of this fuel will impact the design of new and future airport infrastructure.

Ben has been recognised as one of Engineers Australia’s Most Innovative Engineers in the Australian energy market, having worked in energy strategy, infrastructure advisory, project development, project engineering and technology R&D roles in Australia and the US. Ben leads a group of future-focused energy and sustainability experts that develop strategies, policies and projects to embrace the opportunity and navigate the risks of the global energy transition. He is passionate about bringing diverse thinking and harnessing new technologies to solve our most challenging decarbonisation problems.

This webinar will cover:

Airports have been on a trajectory in recent years to tailor their passenger offerings and to find a balance between being a place of transit but also a destination – developing into miniature precincts.
While airports, airlines and their partners in the global aviation ecosystem have been justifiably focused on survival through the industry upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic, an airport’s contribution to climate change remains a long-term risk that needs to be on the radar of owners and operators.

Reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions can be addressed hand in hand with the industry’s post-pandemic transformation and help airport owners to respond to changing social values and stakeholder expectations.

Now is the time for airport owners to formulate a decarbonisation roadmap towards Net Zero, to pivot towards operations and physical infrastructure that make a positive environmental and social impact.

In this webinar, we will explore the short-, medium- and long-term opportunities for airports on a pathway to decarbonisation.
